Hey all!

Ok after much consideration, we have come up with 2 dates for class chalet! Either 2nd december, which is a thursday, or 16 december, which is also a thursday :D PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me or rong wei or just tagging at the tagboard whether or not there are any VIOLENT objections, or if any of you CANNOT make it for any day. PLEASE TELL US ASAP!!

OH YA~ Anyone wants a 2A Christmas party? We can shun bian if the date is 16 december coz nearer to christmas mahh :D

Also, there are 2 choices, either we book a chalet like last year, which would be VERY expensive $ OR we book a smaller one, which is less expensive, but only has 2 bedrooms....

If you are wondering why is cost a problem, its coz not all 40 ppl will turn up, the date is during the super peak season, andandand there will be a BBQ [or not?].

Anyone up for potluck to save money?? :D

If not, I think, the amount will come up to above $20 PER PERSON

HELLO everyone! hahaha :D

For the 'Outstanding Class Award', we actually got $50 Times voucher. So, the multi-million dollar question is, how to spend it? Give your suggestions at the tag box. :D

1)As suggested by 'cher. Buy a book and donate to the school library.

2)My idea. ahhaha. Have a lucky draw every month, from Jan to Oct. Each time, the winner will get $5 (the voucher is in the denomination of $5). :D

3)Buy something and divide. (This should be harder, as Times is not like Popular. Though they sell things other then books, it's limited and much more expensive)

4)Somebody buy the voucher; meaning that we will have $50 CASH. It would be much easier this way.

Anyway, we still have $20/$30 (I forgot) of Popular voucher. I do not know whether the treasurer has bought anything yet.

Racial Harmony Day

Let the ball rolling! I am going to start on something. :)

Racial Harmony Day is celebrated annually on 21 July in schools. On this day, students are encouraged to wear traditional costumes (at least for my primary school), and the whole school will be in festive mood, celebrating it.

Over the day, students will learn about other races' culture, and might be allowed to play their traditional games and even eat traditional delicacies. For me, when I was in primary school, I had the chance to play gasing, and eat some Indian tidbit. (:(:(: But behind this celebratory mood, there is actually a sad history behind it...... :(

The year was 1964, 21 July. It was Prophet Muhammad's birthday, and the Malays were at the Padang, celebrating. After the speeches, the procession went towards Geylang. Along the way, a policeman asked a group which had dispersed, to rejoin the main procession. But instead of obeying the policeman's order, they attacked him instead.

This led to racial riots, after the group of Malays attacked ethnic Chinese-Malay passers-by and spectators too. The riots were belived to have started at 5pm, along Kallang and Geylang Serai. Curfew was ordered at 9.30pm to restore order; but in the first day of rioting, 4 were killed and 178 injured.

At 6am the next day, curfew was lifted; but the fighting intensified, and curfew was once again ordered. It was not completely lifted until 2 August, 11 days after the first riot started. During this period, about 23 people were killed, and 450 injured, with significant damage on properties and vehicles.

Also, 3000 people, including 600 secret society members and 256 people charged with possession of dangerous weapons, while the rest were of violating curfew.

So, to commemorate it, the government set this day as Racial Harmony Day; and so today this is how we have Racial Harmony Day. :) :) :)

Hey everyone, how's your results?
For those who did well (not me >.<) , CONGRATS!
But for those who didn't, dun worry, there's still 2nd semester!

But anyway, the point of this post is to inform you guys of 2A BBQ!
So it'll be on the 20th June, is tat ok? For those who can't make it, pls sms me kayy?
If less den 20 going hor den i shall change date. At least get half of the class to go.
Pls tell me quick, cos i scared no space or else we all must go school canteen eat chicken rice :)

Edit from Paul: The food will cost around $100, and if you want to book a bbq pit at Pasir Ris, it will cost $20. So the initial estimate will be $120. And for convenience sake, if you want to take bus there, book the pits 40+, as there is a bus-stop near there. Take bus 403, for nine stops and you will reach there.

Bring thermometer on tuesday

Ingredients for 2 pies

2 medium potatoes
80g lean minced pork
50g frozen mixed vegetables
1 tbsp evaporated milk
1 clove garlic, chopped
Egg for glazing
1 tsp margarine
Pinch of salt
1 tsp Mixed herbs
Pepper
2 Aluminium baking cases

Preheat oven to 250 degree celcius

Mashing the Potato

Boil scrubbed potatoes for at least 30 minutes until softened.
Prick potato with fork to check if it is cooked.
Drain away hot water and let potatoes cool.
Peel and mash potatoes.
When lumps are removed, add 1 tsp margarine, 1 tbsp evaporated milk, a pinch of salt, a dash of pepper and continue mashing until well-mixed.

Preparing the Fillings

Season minced pork with 1 tsp mixed herbs, pinch of salt and dash of pepper.
Heat oil over medium flame.
Fry garlic until fragrant.
Stir-fry minced pork until cooked.
Add in mixed vegetables and stir-fry.
Distribute fillings equally between two aluminium baking cases.

Making the Pie

Arrange mashed potato as a topping over the fillings.
Glaze with egg.
Bake at 250ºC for 20 minutes.

The facts on swine flu:

WHAT IS IT?

Swine influenza is a common and sometimes fatal respiratory disease among pigs, first identified in 1930, that is caused by a Type A influenza virus. Normally the disease is specific only to pigs. But sometimes pigs can harbour more than one flu virus at one time, which enables the pathogens to mix genes. As a result, a new viral strain emerges that can cross the species barrier to humans, starting with people in contact with infected pigs. The latest threat is a strain of the H1N1 type of flu virus.

WHY THE ALARM?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the virus can be contagious among humans in close contact and the outbreak has "pandemic potential," meaning there is risk of a spread across regions or continents. In the past century, novel flu viruses have killed tens of millions of people and cost billions of dollars in economic costs. Worries about a new pandemic have focused in recent years on the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has killed around 250 people since 2003, mainly in Southeast Asia. But H5N1 is hard to transmit among humans, and its threat has been contained by culling infected poultry.

WHAT ABOUT THE UNKNOWNS?

Experts insist there is no certainty that a pandemic will happen or if so that it will be a mass killer. There are many unknowns about the new strain, especially how easily it spreads between people, how virulent it is or could become. Figuring this out will be the work of gene scientists and epidemiologists.

WHICH COUNTRIES ARE MOST AFFECTED?

Mexico is the epicentre of the outbreak, with 103 confirmed and suspected deaths as of Monday and about 400 people hospitalised. In 10 other countries, there have been 57 confirmed or suspected cases, none of them fatal, among people returning from Mexico. The United States has had 20 confirmed cases, Canada six confirmed cases and Spain one case. Several countries from Colombia to New Zealand are investigating suspected cases.

HOW DOES THE VIRUS SPREAD?

Swine flu is thought to spread like typical flu, i.e. in viral particles expelled in coughs and sneezes that are then breathed in by someone nearby, or deposited on surfaces that are then touched by the hand and transmitted to the mouth, nose or eyes. People with the virus may be able to infect others beginning a day before symptoms develop, and up to seven days or more after becoming sick. Young children may be contagious for somewhat longer.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Sudden fever above 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), cough, headache, aching joints, nasal congestion, general fatigue and lack of appetite. Some people who have contracted the virus report runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In past cases, swine flu has caused pneumonia and respiratory failure and worsened chronic medical conditions.

HAVE THERE BEEN OUTBREAKS IN THE PAST?

From December 2005 through February 2009, only 12 cases of swine flu were reported in the United States. In 1988 a pregnant woman died after contact with sick pigs. In 1976, swine flu at an US military base at Fort Dix, New Jersey killed one soldier. Four were hospitalized with pneumonia. At first, experts feared the strain was related to the Spanish Flu of 1918, which killed millions, but the strain never spread beyond the base.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends oseltamivir (marketed as Tamiflu) and zanamivir (marketed as Relenza) for treating or preventing infection. These drugs work by preventing the virus from reproducing. Most of the previously reported swine flu cases have recovered fully without requiring medical attention and without antiviral medicines.

IS THERE A SWINE FLU VACCINE?

There is a vaccine for pigs, but not for humans. It is unclear whether current "seasonal" vaccines, designed to combat smaller genetic shifts in major strains of flu virus that are in circulation, may provide a shield.

WHAT ARE THE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES?

Public health authorities in many countries have installed classic control measures, screening points of entry and isolating people suspected to have fallen ill. Mexico has ordered the closure of schools and cancelled public gatherings. Individuals can wear a face mask, avoid greeting someone with a kiss or a handshake, wash their hands frequently and clean commonly-touched surfaces such as telephones, door handles, tables and lift buttons.

CAN SWINE FLU BE CAUGHT FROM EATING PORK?

No. The virus is respiratory, and not transmitted by food. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 71 F (160 C) kills viruses and bacteria.

YAY! I have finished the updating of contact list and making of relay system!
Once again, thanks to those who helped to ask for numbers. :)

And anyway, after the class com meeting on thursday, we "decided" that the class fund can be lend to people. So if you have no money for lunch, etc, no money to pay for stuff, you can go and find our treasurers. :D

And any suggestions of what we can do to the $30 Popular voucher? I'm thinking of buying things like stationery, so that if you forget to bring to school, you can borrow, and also, lend markers to teachers, esp Ms Ng, who seems so pitiful, who is "forced" to use the visualiser everyday, after the school limited the amount of markers a teacher can get to 5 per month.......

So how?

Ok, as some of you know, there will be a class outing during the march holidays. We[me and rong wei] are planning on having the outing from evening to night. Any violent objections? Well, this is OBVIOUSLY not compulsary, but I do encourage everybody to go! Well, actually, there are plans as such:

EOY holidays: Chalet[!!!] (includs outing and BBQ as well)

Ok, so as for the march's outing.

I know I am posting this post at quite a late time... But for those who sees, it please pass the messege to tell those who have not paid the edusave money to bring the signed paper and $30 tomorrow. Please pass the message to everyone, and I hope that plutonians will receive the message.

The longest blog post ever posted by me.....

And the cream puff recipe is here....

Student 1

1.Preheat oven to 200°C.
2.Collect 50g butter in small saucepan.
3.Add 100ml water into saucepan.
4.Heat over medium flame and stir until butter melts.

Student 2
1.Weigh out 50g plain flour.
2.Sieve flour with ¼ tsp baking powder.
3.Beat one egg into empty measuring jug.

Once butter is melted, lower to small flame.

Add in sifted flour and stir vigorously until the mixture does not stick to the sides of the pan.

Remove from fire and pour into mixing bowl to cool.

While waiting for the mixture to cool, grease the baking tray with butter.

Using the electric mixer, add a little beaten egg at a time and beat well to mix.

Continue beating in the eggs until the mixture becomes a shiny paste thick enough to hold its own shape.

Use 2 teaspoons to shape cream puffs onto baking tray.

Bake on top rack at 200ºC for 25 minutes.

Let the baked puffs cool slightly before cutting a slit at the side.

Allow puffs to cool completely before using a piping bag to put in the filling. E.g. ice-cream, custard cream.

Cream of Mushroom Soup Recipe

Ingredients per table
25g fresh shitake mushrooms, sliced (1 bag per class = 250g)
25g fresh button mushrooms, sliced (1 can per class)
20g plain flour
½ cup skimmed milk (about 125 ml, so slightly more than 1 carton per class)
½ tbsp butter (about 7g)
1/3 chicken stock cube
300ml water
Salt
Pepper

Method
1.Mix plain flour, milk and water to form a thick liquid.
2.Melt butter in saucepan and fry mushrooms until fragrant.
3.Add in mixture of flour, water and skimmed milk and stir well.
4.Add in chicken stock cube and stir until dissolved.
5.Cook, stirring all the time, until the mixture thickens.
6.Season with salt and pepper.

Equipment
Chopping board
Knife
Measuring jug
Soup ladle
1 tablespoon
Frying slice
Small saucepan
